Click here to find a list of past threads! What have you been playing? There are five hidden improvements in the Skyrim Special Edition, including Rain Occlusion and bit memory usage, and flowing water youtube.
Rain occlusion rain doesn't clip through shelters. Fixes the z-fighting bug two objects in the LOD flickering in and out. Improved stability due to 64 bit engine Water flow improved, instead of flowing in one direction it will now move around objects, bend around corners, etc.
You can now loot the "torturer's hood" from the executioner at the beginning of the game. You left out the higher limit on NPCs fighting each other before they just switch off and stand there doing nothing.
I've been trying to up the grids loaded at a single time and have been running into the AI cutting out. Might this be related? It seems to be buggy because the game just hard crashes randomly walking around when I go up to 19 grids.
I eagerly await the mods that utilize the engine's new stability to make the Civil War really feel like a war. There were mods for the old Skyrim that made civil war battles spawn with people maybe, but it lagged a lot on my 6 core until half were dead.
Ok folks, I'm calling it now. Civil War mod featuring dragons, legions of mages, heavily armored shocktroops, and of course, a random mud crab or bandit wondering what the flying fuck it's doing there. Just for good measure.
Whiterun has enough space on the plains surrounding it to fit an army there, but maybe there could even be a mod to double the effective size of Skyrim itself I'll be saying some variant of that 70 years from now.
Then you also add in the mod to replace dragons with thomas tank engine and give the crabs top hats and monocles etc etc and you could have the most insane war ever.
A crab with a top hat and a monocle? That's where I draw the line. Come on, Master Chief. Let's get the fuck outta here. Saving 1, people 5 minutes is saving 5, minutes worth of time which is definitely significant. So in the original, if you went under cover it would still be raining?
I somehow never noticed that. Same goes for the water in the rivers. Usually in the game you're either out in the open or inside, that's probably why you didn't notice. I think it's more like on a slanted roof, the "droplet" effect would clip through the roof because the droplet was programmed to only happen on a flat, horizontal surface.
As a result, you'd see half of the droplet going into the roof and half splashing on a non-existent surface. No, in the original version the rain would pass through any and all overhangs. You had to pass through a loading screen to get it to stop.
For instance, stand in or lie in any of the many tents near the army camps and you'll see rain and snow clip through them as if they weren't even there - in the original that is. Over the stiff animations of the NPC's?
Or hearing the same voice actors constantly? Or the bite-sized "cities"? Or the glitchy companions? But those two things are what bugged you the most? Apparently I can't even say "Skyrim is glitchy" without catching shit.
Oh I just meant graphically wise. I definitely agree with you. Especially the glitchy companions and how often NPCs try to talk to you when you're just standing there minding your own business. The city sizes don't really bother me since TES cities have always been that way but I do know it's an issue that should hopefully be fixed in VI since last gen consoles really held things back when it comes to all of that.
But then again Fallout 4's "towns" aren't that big either so what do I know? I've only experienced more instances of z-fighting in SSE over Legacy Skyrim; though that might have to do with Nvidia. I never noticed z-fighting in the original, but I've noticed one instance so far in SSE.
For me it's the exact opposite. Z-fighting everywhere in the original those damn mountains in the horizon outside Whiterun but so far I haven't seen a single instance in the SE.
I have noticed that the mountain z-fighting is gone, the new instances I've experienced are with distant architecture; like dragonsreach, blue palace, castle dour, and such.
The z-fighting on Dragonsreach I'm getting now is far more noticeable than the mountain flickering in the old version. The fix will presumably be in the next update. I didn't even notice any problems with the vanilla game, I just downloaded the unofficial patch out of habit.
I wonder how many countless hours people spent trying to fix this unsolvable problem. I know I spent a few in my day. And then I'd forget next Bethesda game and try again. Yeah the mountains outside of Whiterun really bugged for me no matter what.
I could have hundreds of mods, or none at all, and it would just freak the fuck out everytime. Are you running the Unoffical Skyrim Patch? There are some bugs in the mod, where the meshes they have used to replace some things cause z fighting apparently you cannot just reuse old meshes without issues.
No flicker on my GTX I've actually seen no graphical bugs in the Special Edition at all that are present in the original. It's hit or miss. I've only seen it once. Could be something running in the background making things messy.
It's at least far less common now. The whole engine runs beautifully compared to even fallout 4 granted with fewer polly models and smaller textures, but still. I have an AMD card. Haven't noticed it on the new edition.
Still need to quest to get the arch archmage's quarters don't you? I enjoyed that quest line because it delt with magic and mysterious people. After all the errands I did for the Thieves Guild it was a nice change of pace.
That quest line takes you to Labrynthian where you can get a Dragon Priest mask. Not sure you can get into the dungeon without doing the quests before it. The robes that you get for finishing the College quests are much better than the ones lying in his room.
It's improved, but it isn't fixed. I was walking along Whiterun and had Dragonsreach and a few other buildings flicker on me. Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Walking to Whiterun there were a few buildings glitching out really bad.
I wonder if he really only tested it in that one spot he showed in the video. The Torturer's Hood reminds me of the glasses in Fallout 3. You can only get them at the start, and you have to loot the body of your dad's scientist friend to get them.
To my knowledge and I've played Fallout 3 rather extensively, it's the only way to get glasses easily. No major characters wear glasses, and you can't buy them anywhere. This might be for good reason, too. Not only do the glasses actually look good on your character, they give you a slight boost to your intelligence stat.
Also, doesn't the museum in Rivet City wear a pair of glasses? Zimmer also wears a pair. So does the Caravan Doctor merchant. It's funny because in the same room as the torturer's hood you can get a mage's hood as well.
Then I ran into two Alik'r warriors with their special hoods outside of Whiterun, and now I've got a nice little collection going. It fits better with leather armor than the cloth Mage and Alik'r warrior hoods. To my knowledge the only other leather hood in the game is the Thieves Guild one.
Just for the record, Z-fighting isn't fixed, just reduced. It'll never be fully fixed, at least not in Frankenbryo. Also, the bit engine and improved water shaders were heavily advertised prior to release, and are not hidden improvements at all.
And the torturer's hood thing is Is it worth the full price they are commanding for it? I've read that the audio quality has been downgraded and some were saying it's actually pretty terrible compared to the original audio but that's really all I've heard.
If you have original skyrim and all dlc on pc, you get it free. If you're in console, in my opinion, it's worth it for mods and being able to play it on current gen. I had no idea.
I don't own any of the dlc's. I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy them and get the deluxe that way. I picked up the last 2 DLCs like a month or two ago for pretty cheap.
You'd defo have to do some research there. Most likely will be cheaper, I'd go that route. The audio downgrade is getting patched next week Personally it sounds better, maybe I'm crazy but the meat of the package comes from game stability.
Looking forward to when modding gets up to speed. Flickering is still there, it's just not as widespread as before. Haven't seen it by looking at the mountains, but Whiterun flickers pretty bad from far away.
Maybe to people into games but for most people they just thought it was better textures. Most people have no idea what 64 bit even signifies which can be seen just by reading replies to your comment. The hidden improvement was improved stability, improved framerate, and more NPCs fighting at the same time.
Those weren't hidden at all. Nobody would've given a shit if it was just 64bit that didn't help anything, it was a clear logical path to the fact that 64bit also includes the improvements you mentioned which are the parts that will help with more mods and such.
The general consumer doesn't know or give a shit about that That's what bit, those are not hidden improvements, that's what happens when transferring to a bit engine, you get all of what you said above, those are the advantages of a bit engine.
You don't magically get more NPC's fighting at the same time by having bit. Perhaps indirectly, but definitely not directly. Same for the rest really. Indirectly it certainly is. The way larger chunk of addressable memory is this application is intended to produce those affects.
This is just a bandaid over Bethesda's shitty programming. I think you're both right. What he's saying is that Bethesda's engine and coding created stability issues because of poor optimization. Having more addressable memory definitely does increase stability.
When you run out of RAM, things tend to stutter, slow down, and crash quite quite a bit. Clearly it is considering people are reporting on the improvements caused by the upgrade to bit Also, your previously visited pages will take longer to reload if you delete all the files in the browser cache.
Cache deletion may be a good practice for privacy-oriented users, or for people transitioning to a different browser, but we would not wipe the cache by default. In our tests, CCleaner detected a whopping 7GB of log files created by Windows, which it automatically flagged for deletion.
Many of these were hundreds of megabytes in size. However, log files can be useful if your computer is misbehaving, as they contain error messages to assist you or a technician. They're not supposed to get anywhere near this large, and old logs just tend to sit unused and take up space, but we'd prefer to keep at least the most recent one by default, in case something goes haywire later.
These were previously installed Windows Update patches. If Windows says that they're OK to delete, it's a mystery why CCleaner -- which ordinarily takes a more aggressive approach -- did not flag them.
While MB isn't a huge amount of space, the Disk Cleanup report made us wonder what else CCleaner might be overlooking or not prioritizing. It's not clear what would happen to CCleaner if we told it to delete its own Registry entry, but users not closely inspecting the Windows Registry Cleaner results might find out the hard way.
CCleaner remains a handy tool for freeing up storage space, letting you customize how it works and permanently erase files. However, some behavioral quirks indicate that it's not quite a full replacement for Windows' built-in disk cleanup tools, which tend to be more conservative but also safer.
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.
Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. Need to be careful with checking boxes or some important files can be removed too. I have been using this software for a while.
I also use it to uninstall programs that i don't need any more. If you want something simple and powerful at the same time then try out this software. Was this review helpful? Login or create an account to post a review.

Clearly it is considering people are reporting on the improvements caused by the upgrade to bit To be fair, not many people actually know what 64 bit will actually do with Skyrim.
To the uneducated, they probably think more mods and work better with a bit OS and many programs are bit now some 32 bit or with both options but what does it even mean to the average person?
I've had countless customers in the past ask me what bit means and what it does to their Windows. Why some programs use 32 and Why bit is x86 instead of x32 like x64 for bit. Still this day, majority of people still don't know what bit does and I don't blame them.
The logical conclusion is twice as much more "bits" but what does that exactly mean for the average consumer? You've certainly got something of a point. I still think the modding scene is fairly large and a big part of it but it definitely seems a lot more people than I thought don't know about these things.
Eh, I still get the z-fighting bug. I suspect as people get more time with the game we'll find other bugs and other fixes. I saw something that looked like z-fighting but upon closer inspection it appeared to be a lighting bug?
Just a heads up. It was on a mountain. The massive z-fighting I've seen in the past is gone finally so far. I hope to crap they didn't "fix" it by just making sure things are never on the same z coord. Alternatively, if you really want hz or whatever, there's a ini edit that can adjust the physics rate, iFPSClamp, but it's known to be very buggy in and of itself and really shouldn't be used.
I remember when Rain occlusion was fixed in Morrowind, by dedicated people hacking up the executable itself. Thank god for the Rain Occlusion and water flow change, two very small details or lack of that have bugged the hell out of me since Skyrim was released.
In a few months when all the major mods have fully updated to work well with the SE, this is gonna be a hell of an immersive game. Lack of rain occlusion has bothered me since Morrowind my friend I remember when Bethesda had their mod showcase and fixing the water was one of the first things they did, along with cloth physics and actual spears.
I remember that too, wondered for weeks when we were going to get that stuff in the actual game and was pissed when that video just faded into obscurity and nothing actually came from it. You can see there are three options for anti-aliasing: In other words, high, low, or off.
There are tickboxes for screen space reflections, ambient occlusion, precipitation occlusion, snow shader, lens flare, and bit render targets. The in-game settings menu provides sliders for the fade distances of things like NPCs, items, objects, and grass, and there's also a depth of field slider.
One thing that stands out sort of immediately: Everywhere I go, whether running through the woods, riding across the plains, and even in Solitude where I started a fight that resulted in about a dozen guards and citizens all whomping on me at once, both indoors and outdoors, I never lost more than a few frames, and then only momentarily.
It's been a smooth ride so far. Which isn't to say this isn't still a Bethesda RPG. While the visuals have been improved, Skyrim is still Skyrim and the bugs and glitches that shipped with the original game are still there.
Above, you can see the opening sequence, and how a random horse winds up getting in the way of the actors who are busy trying to execute me. The horse became such a problem that the sequence stalled before the dragon could show up, so we all just stood around staring and waiting.
After several minutes it was clear Mr. Ed wasn't going to be moved, so I had to restart. It hasn't changed much after all. The images below were taken using the same saved game, first taking a screenshot in the original Skyrim, saving the game there, then transferring the save file to Skyrim Special Edition and loading it.
So, what you're seeing is me standing in the same spot at the same time of day with the same weather conditions in both games. The image from classic Skyrim is on the left, and Special Edition is on the right.
